Calm Mom Resources

Everyone has their favorite “new mom” resources. Make sure to mention your favorite resources on The Calm Mom’s Forum. Here are mine:

Ways to Meet New Moms

bullet Get exercise, get your baby some fresh air, and meet other new moms at Baby Boot Camp: www.babybootcamp.com. You can also check out www.onefitmama.com which currently offers classes in the Philadelphia area but will be spreading its wings soon!
bullet Find a Mom’s club in your area: www.momsclub.org.
bullet Find a local breastfeeding support group:
-Ask at the hospital where you gave birth.
   -Ask your obstetrician or pediatrician.
-Contact the La Leche League (1-800-LALECHE or www.lalecheleague.org).
bullet Go see a movie with your baby!
Go to your favorite search engine and type “reel moms” and the name of your
city to see if this fabulous resource is available in your area.
bullet Take advantage of great cultural opportunities in your city, with your baby along for the fun. Visit www.metropolitanmoms.com.
bullet Get out of the house
Take your baby to music class, gym class, story time at your local library, or
for a walk at your local park. When you head out with your baby, you will start
   meeting new moms everywhere!

Great Books about Babies

As a behavioral psychologist, and a new mom, I found the following books most helpful in caring for a new baby:

bullet Sleeping Through the Night, by Jodi Mindell
bullet Sleep Deprived No More: From Pregnancy to Early Motherhood-Helping You and Your Baby Sleep Through the Night, by Jodi Mindell
bullet Touchpoints: 0-3, by T. Berry Brazelton
bullet Positive Discipline: The First Three Years, by Jane Nelson, Cheryl Erwin, & Roslyn, Duffy (most relevant toward the end of the first year, and into the second)

Great Books for Mommies

And Baby Makes Three: The Six-Step Plan for Preserving Marital Intimacy and Rekindling Romance After Baby Arrives, by John Gottman

Some Information about My Website

The illustration of The Calm Mom on my homepage was created by Virginia Johnson, a very talented Canadian fashion designer and illustrator. Virginia designs fabulous tote bags that would make great diaper bags for new moms! Her caftan shirts are also great (and even work in the early months of pregnancy). Check out her website at www.virginiajohnson.com.

My website and logo was designed by One Lily Web Solutions. Angela Nielsen, President of One Lily, has designed many websites for “mom-owned” businesses. Check out her website to learn about her services if you are a mom getting started with your own business. Angela is one of the core team members for the first-ever Momference in October 2007, a Mom Conference designed to educate moms and empower women, all via telephone! Learn more.
